Cynthia Hamilton: Twenty years ago, Cynthia Hamilton founded Hyper-formance to promote dance arts, provide performance opportunities for area dancers, and establish a nucleus of trained people to provide dance arts outreach to low-income children in her community. Hamilton's organization is a great venue for arts appreciation, physical activity, mentoring, and teamwork among children ages four and up, and offsets the annual $120 cost per student with fundraising activities such as candy sales and dance marathons. No child is ever turned away from participating in the fun at Hyper-formance. If a child's family cannot afford the cost of participation, Hamilton finds a scholarship for the child. She herself receives no compensation for her work and ensures all participation fees are used for costumes, supplies, and food for the students. During a highly anticipated annual weekend camping trip, students from six Hyper-formance sites in and around Spokane develop themes and musical styles for their big spring performance. After the trip, Hamilton spends countless hours writing a script, selecting music, and choreographing the entire show. In addition to rehearsing with the kids, Hamilton organizes volunteers from organizations such as the Kiwanis Club and Key Club to help build stage sets and costumes, mentor the students, and participate in the show. Hamilton does all of this while maintaining a successful career as a realtor and active membership in the Kiwanis Club, and serving as President of the Chase Youth Foundation, a local non-profit organization benefiting youth.
“Safeco agents around the country work with so many outstanding citizens. We are proud to be honoring this year's Community Hero Award recipients and hope our small contribution to their causes enables them to continue making a difference in the communities they serve," adds Danielle Clark, Safeco community relations director.
